Schools and Education in Mallorca

Choosing a school is often one of the first decisions when moving to Mallorca with children. Start with your child’s age, current curriculum and language needs, then consider where the family will live. Visiting a school and trying the daily journey can be just as useful as comparing academic programmes.

This guide brings together private and international schools across the island, with short introductions and direct sources to help you make a shortlist. It is organised by area rather than by ranking.

Understanding the school options

Mallorca has public schools, privately managed schools with publicly subsidised places (known as concertados), and independent private schools. International schools may follow a foreign curriculum, while other private schools follow the Spanish system. A school’s ownership, teaching language and curriculum are separate questions: check all three for the particular year group you need.

The selection below covers the general-school entries classified as private schools or foreign teaching centres in the Balearic Government directory. Standalone nurseries, vocational colleges and adult-education centres are outside its main scope. Concertado schools form a separate category and should not be overlooked. The official directory is the place to check the wider range of schools and their registered stages.

Public and concertado schools

Private education is one part of the island’s school system. Public schools and concertados offer further choices across Mallorca. A concertado is privately managed but has publicly subsidised provision; the arrangements can differ by stage, so ask which classes are subsidised and which services carry separate charges.

For these routes, use the Balearic Government’s school admissions service for current procedures and dates. Confirm teaching languages, language support and admission criteria with the school. Do not assume that buying a home in a particular neighbourhood guarantees a place.

What to ask before accepting a place

  • Curriculum and progression: which qualifications will your child work towards, and how would a later move to another country affect their studies?
  • Languages: which subjects are taught in each language, and what support is available for new arrivals?
  • Individual support: discuss learning needs directly and ask what the school can provide in practice.
  • Admissions: check assessments, waiting lists, documents and the earliest possible start date.
  • Total costs: request a written breakdown covering tuition, registration, meals, transport, uniform, examinations and activities.
  • Daily life: compare the timetable, school transport, collection arrangements and extracurricular activities.

Choosing a home around family life

Once you have a realistic school shortlist, compare homes around the journeys you will actually make. Include work, shopping, sports and the needs of siblings, and visit neighbourhoods during a normal school week. A property that works well for holidays may feel quite different during the school term.
